Meet our Staff

Lisa Sickler, Director & Teacher, Room F

"I came to Small Friends in 2003, when my husband and I were looking for a preschool for our son. Prior to starting a family, I had been an elementary school teacher for 10 years, working with children in grades 1–3. I was thrilled to find a preschool where the staff  were so knowledgeable about child development and the environment was inviting and engaging. Two years later, I joined the staff as a preschool teacher and the following year I became the Director. I love the relationshiups that develop between families and teachers as they work together in the classrooms. It is a privilege to share this part of children's early childhood journeys and to explore, create, laugh and play with them every day!"

Jelena Mrdjan, Teacher, Room F

"Hello, my name is Jelena (pronounced Yell-en-ah) Mrdjan and I am fortunate to be joining the Small Friends community to continue following my passion and my 12 year journey of teaching preschool. I am very excited to be here!! I have called SW Portland home for almost 30 years. My husband and I have two wonderful college-aged daughters and a fluffy white terrier mix, Penny. Both of our daughters attended a local co-op preschool and had memorable experiences. Watching our daughters grow during their preschool years cemented how instrumental those years are to a child’s emotional, social and physical development. My goal is to teach the whole child, equip them with a love of learning, and to foster independence. I am delighted to be on this wonderful preschool journey with you and your child!"

Meghan Tust, Teacher, Room B

"I am thrilled to be joining the Small Friends community. Prior to my start at Small Friends, I taught at a local cooperative preschool from 2013-2016.  I was also a Special Education Teacher in Colorado and Oregon for five years before that. My husband and I live in SW Portland and have two awesome kids and a large drooling Newfoundland. Both of my children attended a cooperative preschool and I really value the community and partnership between parents and teachers that a cooperative setting creates. I find teaching preschool magical. The amount of growth and development that occurs during the preschool years is amazing! I feel so lucky to be able to join children on this incredible journey of learning and exploration."

Christine Bravo, Teacher, Room B

"I am honored to join the wonderful staff at Small Friends Preschool! Before joining Small Friends, I worked with students from preschool to adult, starting my career working with college students preparing to study overseas. I currently live in Southwest Portland with my husband, and our two children. I have been an active volunteer in both my children's cooperative preschool and elementary school, and it was through these experiences that I was drawn to early childhood education. I am thrilled to be working with preschoolers at Small Friends! It is such a magical time of life, and I love meeting children where they are and supporting them through their challenges and successes. I am excited to be a part of their experience and to support them on their journey of learning and growth!"

Kari Martin, Registrar

"I live in SW Portland with my husband and three kids. When it was time for my youngest to go to preschool, there was no question where we wanted her to go. My daughter loved her time at Small Friends, we couldn't have asked for a better experience. The teachers are so caring, thoughtful and amazing at what they do! The projects and creations that the kids get to experience in and out of the classroom are so unique and leave such an impression on them. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to join the Small Friends staff as the Registrar in the winter of 2020 and I look forward to working with all of our families."
